Hi, Tim from Realm here.
We did publicly commit to open-sourcing the core under the Apache 2.0
license [1]. I’m an Apache foundation committer, an OSCON PC member, and
a fervent believer in open-source, so I wouldn’t feel entirely
comfortable using a closed-source db system myself either! At the end of
the day I completely understand the objections on that point, and I know
that some people will wait until the core goes open to start using
Realm, which is why we’re working as fast as possible to fully
open-source the core.
We do offer paid, enterprise-style support as well [2] if that’s what
you meant, and we are otherwise committed to building & extending Realm
in the open (check our GitHub [3] to see the kind of openness we’ve
shown so far in the process).
Now regarding stability… For what it’s worth Realm has been running in
production at Zynga & others since 2012 [4], and there’s more apps
shipping with Realm with every day that passes since we launched publicly.
Clearly, there’s still a long road ahead for us to have the kind of API
stability something like SQLite can enjoy (which tbh, doesn’t come
without its own API madness either). Either way, we’re already reliable
& attractive enough for some big companies to trust us in production.
Hope this additional info helps. I’m bummed out some people still miss
it so I’ll be working to see if we can highlight this more clearly on
our website, because I totally agree these are important considerations.
