Actually I see different things in different apps - Mail has a gradient for each row even for contiguous selections. iTunes unifies the selection for its main list views (playlists only allow a single selection). It's hard to find an app that uses a source-style list that allows multiple selections, so I might be imagining it. But I'd still like to know if it can be done.
