The tags are just Spotlight metadata, as far as I know. There are 3rd party apps like Leap and TagIt that have been using this metadata for tags for years.

However, I looked through both NSMetadataAttributes.h and MDItem.h and didn’t find anything relevant with the name “tag” or “label” in it*. Weird. But you should be able to inspect the metadata of a tagged file and see what the actual attribute name is.

* The old Finder labels/colors were just an integer 0-7 stored in the filesystem attributes; not related to the new tags.
