Property lists consist of keys and values in my understanding, but a string is just an unordered chain of characters. What would the keyes be, actually the one key, to which to assign the string @"test" then?
Not strictly true. Property lists are comprised purely of dictionaries, arrays, strings, numbers, dates & data. Usually that tends to involve a dictionary as the root object. But just a string by itself is a valid property list.
