But FWIW, I’d guess we are a generation or two away from all Macs (at least MBPs) having GPS built-in (and cellular as well). Always-Internet-connected, always geographically locatable is pretty much inevitable. IMHO, the biggest computing change the iPhone was the catalyst for was the shift away from geographically ignorant computing and data, to location-aware data. There are just too many things which can be done with that location-aware data, and too much money awaiting it for it not to happen.
You might be right, but I think laptops are a bit different than iPhones, in that they're rarely used while moving; sure they move to a new location, where they sit relatively still, so solutions like Skyhook will probably continue for some time (note also that it's hard to get a GPS lock indoors without a really nice antenna).
But in those rare instances where you're using a laptop while moving outdoors (e.g., I write ground station software for various flying things, and next weekend I'm launching a balloon I'll be chasing from a car), being able to feed Core Location from another location source would be great, and it would be especially great if I didn't have to write the code to parse the GPS output myself. (Not that I can't; I'm already doing it in the code on board my balloon, I'm just looking to reduce effort).
There's at least one more good reason to add a real GPS to a computer, and that's to get an accurate clock. Would be nice if the OS had a way to select a GPS for both location and/or time.
