Running the OpenGL Extension Viewer (free in the Mac App Store) on a 2011 MacBook Air on El Capitan, reports OpenGL version 3.3 Intel-10.0.37
My Late 2012 iMac run Yosemite reports OpenGL version 4.1 NVIDIA-10.4.2 310.41.35f01 so I suspect it depends on the video card/driver for the specific machine.
If there's something else you want me to check (and I can do it easily), let me know.
HTH,
Dave
