On further thought I think that's not true - NSWindow can work modally, but it's usual to make it NSPanel. If you use a plain window, I think there are restrictions on which kinds can be used modally, though I'm not sure what those are from the docs.  I think Ken nailed it - probably a bad window outlet. Also, if you're using -init, are you overriding -nibName to return the correct nib name? You have to either explicitly pass it to -initWithWindowNibName: or else override the -nibName method and call -init.
