Yes, I’ve seen objects “gutted” like that as soon as they're deleted.  As to the documentation of -prepareForDeletion, I would say that, although your expectation is reasonable, probably the person who wrote that has never tried it in anger.

Submit document “Feedback” and get on with some alternate approach.
