I don’t think your approach is wrong, I just don’t know what the recommended behavior is.
The other thing that confuses me is that iOS has “selection” and “highlighting” and I’ve never understood how (or if) they’re related. If highlighting is what selection does to show that a cell is selected, then you might be able to solve your problem by using the collectionView:shouldHighlightItemAtIndexPath: delegate method.
