Well, I’ve found that at least one bug has been fixed in 10.11 GM.

At long last, we were able to get a “fixed width” (fully expanded or fully collapsed) sidebar with nice animations (contrast to the Mailbox List sidebar in Mail.app), in a nib, using NSSplitViewController.  Here is the demo project:
