iOS: clearing the keyboard word suggestion bar

iOS 8.4
I'm using a UITextField with "secure text entry" enabled for a password field. This works well, but when subsequent text fields bring up the keyboard, guess what shows up by default in the word suggestion bar atop the keyboard. That's right - the password in clear text!
This sounds like a bug, and maybe it's fixed in iOS 9, but is there a way to clear the suggestion bar?
