Could it be that these people have GateKeeper disabled completely? Not sure why that would lead to your odd behavior, but it might at least be a common factor.
Regarding Sparkle, you do have the “modern” Sparkle (1.14) linked in, and not the “old” Sparkle (1.5), right? Also, this may have something to do with ATS, if your Sparkle setup specifies a http URL instead of a https URL.
