To test whether it was some cached artifact I put the following lines at the end of -countdownTimerDidFire: and the artifact was not redrawn.
[[self window] orderOut:nil];
[[self window] makeKeyAndOrderFront:nil];
I'm not suggesting this as a solution, but as more context as to where the artifact is being held.
