Best way to fade in full-screen view controller on iOS?

I want to simulate the form sheet style on iPad and iPhone. I tried to make a full-screen modal controller with .CrossFade transition, but unfortunately, that hides the presenting view controller.

Is a custom transition the only way to do this?
