I just checked, and the iOS HIG says that sliders are horizontal. The UISlider class reference says that sliders are "always displayed as horizontal bars”. So there’s perhaps good reason not to rotate one:
a. Accessibility. Will it be incomprehensible to users of VoiceOver or other accessibility features?
b. Autolayout. Will it adapt in size correctly?
c. Appearance. Will (e.g) drop shadows be in the right place?
Unfortunately, any issues like this are likely to be subtle and therefore it’s tempting to ignore them. I’m not saying don’t do it, I’m saying be aware of the consequences.
The alternative would be a non-UIControl approach, using a combination of a pan gesture recognizer for the input, with a custom view for the output.
FWIW.
