The solution in Swift I have found uses NSString to cope with NSRange:
// uitv is UITextView
let swiftString = uitv.text
let nsString = swiftString as NSString
let selectedNSRange = uitv.selectedRange
let selectedText = nsString.substringWithRange( selectedNSRange )
