As I remember, when KVO was introduced, it was framed as a bottleneck for implementing bindings. Foundation exposed it as a courtesy to developers who would find it useful in itself.

Cocoa practice has changed since then, but that’s what I gathered at the time.

You’re right, KVC was NeXTStep. The patent on it was one of NS/Apple’s crown jewels.
