FWIW, when I tried to use this persistent state facility (quite a few years ago now), I decided that it was working as advertised, but that the intended behavior was so weird that it was effectively broken. Sorry, I don’t remember why I found it so unintuitive, but I’m sure I gave up trying to use it.
