I'd assumed that since you were working on an “old app” and didn’t know how it worked, that someone else, “your predecessor”, had written it.

Well, I meant to just document the external behavior of how document saving works since Lion, for Mac users. I think Apple probably realized that if such a Knowledge Base article really covered all of the edge cases, it would be a TLDNR. And since Auto Save is supposed to make things self-explanatory and foolproof, they decided to just not write one.
