Calibrating the monitor means setting the gamma and white point to known
standards, (eg D65 and Gamma 2.2 or whatever you choose as appropriate for
these settings) while profiling takes you a step further and saves the
calibrated data for you to use as your system/display profile which is
then used by applications like Photoshop, InDesign etc for screen accurate
editing.
For example, I use a Gretag Spectrolino and

This is a hardware issue and depends very much on whether your monitor
has this capability. If it does, then ColorVisions OptiCal software has
an application called PreCal that you run before profiling the monitor
which allows extremely accurate control of the individual phosphor guns.
The same capability is also available in the cheaper PhotoCal software
(but only if your monitor has the hardware controls to allow it)

Yes it has. It is just a question of degree again dependant on what your
monitor will allow you to do.

I also have X-Rite's monitor optimizer, for good measure. Same question.
This is a good tool (Monitor Spyder does as good a job, if not better at
a much cheaper price) and will read the values from each of your phosphor
guns to set an accurate calibration, only if your monitor and the software
you use, has this provision.
