Calibration vs. Profiling

Just wanted to add a pinch of added clarification to the distinction between
calibration and profiling: you don't have to calibrate in order to profile.
Richard unintentionally implied that profiling is always a next step after
calibration.

"Calibration" means to make a device hit a desired and known target, while
"profile" (or "characterize" or "fingerprint") means to build a description
of how a device behaves. You often calibrate and profile a monitor at the
same time, but, for example, in the case of a Windows box which has no
ability to accept a custom LUT in its video card, all you can do is build a
profile of it. You can't calibrate it because calibration requires a new
LUT to be downloaded into the video card.
