The main problems I found when testing various Frontiers is that chroma in
dark areas (L <20) is lousy. As usual, especialy green is extremly low in
chroma. I had similar problems with other device (Durst/Agfa), but not as
strong as the Frontier.
Using the "noconvert" instead of "sRGB" does make the output darker and
adds additional chroma (~increase by 5). But still, chroma in dark areas is
far too low.
I did print an IT 8.7 target with both modes and compared the results. Most
noticable is, that beside the lighter output of sRGB in dark areas, by far
the biggest differences between the two modi seem to effect the dark grean
colors again (~dE 20! target patches C-F:2-3).
The extremly high difference seems to be local to the dark green area,
indicating that there is no "simple" connection between the two modes.
Anybody with experience how to increase the dark green chroma output of a
Frontier to acceptable levels?
One solution I found is, the use of Kodak instead of Fuji paper. The Kodak
paper does give MUCH better results (at least for my task). The main
problem surely is the higher price for the Kodak D3 paper.
I also read an article about the face recognition routines of the Frontier
350. However, it was unclear to me, if these image dependent color
correction routines are just applied to the scanner or also on digital data
sources?
