It would appear you have some axe to grind against Epson?

No, it's people who blindly pick the market leader whom I try to educate -- be it Epson, Microsoft, Adobe, Wacom, et. al.

The original poster said he didn't have the time to do proper research on other brands, and so was just going to go out and buy an Epson. Please forgive me for presenting him an alternative, as he had invited!

Please also forgive that because I've spent hundreds of hours researching my decision -- visiting reps, getting my own material test printed, even using demo units -- that I'm a bit emphatic about my choice. If such enthusiasm makes you feel threatened, that's your problem. I recognize and respect that others have different needs.

Perhaps the fact
they are making large format ink jet printing accessible to many means
decrease of income for print for pay shops?

I don't care if you like Epson -- why do you cast aspersions and attribute dark motives to the fact that I do not like Epson?

I sell my own large fine-art photography to arts fair patrons. I also do complete "shoot through hang" reproductions of large works for artists, including large-format photography, drum scanning, digital adjustment, and printing. I specifically turn down business from people who walk up with a grainy slide and say, "Can you print this big like yours for me?" :-)

No "print for pay" shop does the whole thing like this, at least in my locale. The entire "print for pay" business is going to have to diversify and specialize in order to survive. ("Sign shops" being a good example.) Anyone with a niche and a brain should make it, no matter how many 24" printers are sold. The more people who turn out bad prints, the more business for good printers!

I'll be delighted when Epson finally gets its act together, so I won't have to spend the first half-hour of my sales pitch explaining why my prints won't fade or discolor, like "the ones they've heard about."

And getting back to the list topic: I notice neither of the replies brought up the joy of profiling the Epson. There's a lot to be said for factory profiles! Go back through the archives and read the tales of woe and intrigue. I admit that I haven't looked into the issue in detail since April, except to note that people on various mailing lists are still struggling with color-managing Epsons.

(And don't forget to add the price of a good colorimeter and profiling package when you do your price comparison. :-)

Well, I'm really away this time. I've got seven 48"x72" reproductions to work on... gotta get those invoices out in time to pay my Christmas credit-card bills... :-)
