I went round with this LaCie (hardware-calibrated) gamma issue for quite
some time.
Short answer: Calibrate to 2.2 gamma and retrain your eye.
As for legacy files displaying lighter on screen, I would calibrate
again and again until I was sure it was nailed. Then I would adjust
my eye to the new standard

I would say you haven't figured it yet or something is defective.
I believe the rule is: Nail the calibration, this sets it to a "world
standard."
Then, don't go back and dink around with the monitor as this defeats the
benefit of hardware calibration. Figure the next step in your workflow.
Note: Be sure to back into control panels and disable all the stuff that
may
want to control gamma, like Adobe Gamma and Knoll gamma. Just as you
may want to disable any competing Color management Systems, like
Kodak Digital Sciences, that you may not be using.
If you want to send me a 200k JPEG Photoshop file, I'll see how it looks
on my LaCie.
