IMHO, RGB reference spaces should be D65, not D50 and should have a gamma of
2.2, not 1.8. A 2.2 gamma is a much better representation of a uniform
perceptual scale than is gamma 1.8.
On PCs perhaps, which are traditionally run "wide open" with an
uncalibrated gamma of 2.2 *or greater*, or for video, which is also
run "hot", but not Macs, which have traditionally run with a
calibrated gamma of 1.8.
And lest we get into some silly argument about which is "better" or
"right," there are those who argue the merits of using a linear gamma
of 1 for all editing work, based on compression of highlights and
shadows when editing in a non-linear space. They would argue that the
closer you can get to 1 *while editing* and still satisfy technical
constraints of your display system, the better off you are.
Also, running 5000K is important to those who are extremely picky
about colors, and need to compare with originals under calibrated
lighting sources.
Bottom line, I'm a little uncomfortable with the notion of "reference
spaces," as though one were "better" than another without knowing
it's purpose. Color management (like resolution and sharpening) is
basically needs-specific, no? The purpose of color management is
device independence, so why choose as a "reference space" one that is
biased toward a particular platform or viewing situation?
