Turns out that this may have been caused by a simple factor:

-My monitor voltage isn't constant. This shows up as a 2-3 Hz. fluctuation
in brightness. The 1710 was never a very good monitor, and this one, after
three years, is giving up the ghost.

I don't have the ability to measure it, but I think that the constantly
fluctuating voltage impairs the sensor's ability to accurately measure the
targets Opti*Cal generates, especially in Precision mode.

I let the monitor warm up two hours instead of one tonight, and the problem
seems to have lessened. The reds and greens still look a little hot though.

I think I can solve this by upgrading to a newer and better quality display.
