I've been using Macs for many years, and troubleshooting them for nearly as
long, but this problem has me stymied, and it seems to be a calibration
issue. I wanted to ping the list before tearing my system limb from limb
tonight to find a cure.
I've got:
-Power Macintosh G4/450
-Applevision 1710 display WITHOUT an ADB connection - using built-in
firmware controls for brightness and contrast. Attached to the built-in Rage
128 card.
-Apple 12" 640X480 Monochrome display (yes, from the Macintosh II days) as a
tool palette. In a fit of ridiculous excess, I have attached this fine
display to a Rage 64 card.
-Photoshop 6.0
-ColorVision MC7 Calibrator and Opti*Cal 3.0.1
My problem is this: even after resetting the display brightness and contrast
to median values, trashing Photoshop 6, ColorSync, Monitor, and Opti*Cal
Preferences, I still can't seem to get a satisfactory calibration.
When displaying original scans of film scanned into Joe Holmes' Ektaspace
(that looked fine before my calibration went wonky), reds and greens in
particular seem way off the charts. I don't possess the vocabulary of color
to describe in more detail my problem, but subsequent calibrations have not
yielded an improvement.
I've tried calibrating with Opti*Cal's expert mode, and I can nail my
brightness and contrast targets to within a pixel of the target, but I'm at
a loss to describe this "wild colors" behavior.
Any ideas?
thanks,
Doug Broussard
