To pick a nit: you were sending it without a *third party* RIP. Of course, the printer driver is RIPping the image in order to render your ~300 pixel/inch onto the 1440 dpi medium of the printer.

This suggests that perhaps Epson (who writes the native driver RIP) knows more about their own printers than third-parties (who write external RIPs) do?
