You can profile the Approval and use that profile for making good
separations. If you're happy with Approval to press matches, then this is
a legimate way to profile an Approval.

For cross rendering however (making the Approval simulate some other
device, other than a press, which is what it's intended for), profiling
the Approval is questionable. If you're not concerned with getting a dot
for dot proof, then fine. Profile and cross render all you like. If
you're interested in a dot for dot proof (no contamination, and the same
sized dots on the proof as you'll get on press) then cross rendering is a
bad idea.
