This is a question I've submitted to BESTColor's tech support but have not
as yet received any response. I'm submitting it to this list virtually
unedited from the way I sent it to BESTColor. I'm hoping some of the gurus
here can offer some insight and solutions:
Background:
A printing company we are working with is about to start receiving digital
camera captures from a very large catalog customer of theirs and have asked
us to come up with a workflow and document procedures and responsibilities
between the digital studio and the printing company's prepress department.
The digital camera captures will be provided to the prepress dept. in the
following form:
* 16-bit RGB TIFF data with the Kodak ProPhotoRGB working space profile
embedded in these images.
We would like to be able to perform the following:
* Submit these images *as is* to the BESTColor RIP and simulate/proof these
images in "PressCMYK" as the target (source?) profile.
The question then becomes two-fold:
1) Will the BESTColor RIP accept RGB data tagged with a working space ICC
profile and be able to simulate a "PressCMYK" ICC profile?
I see it as this:
* BESTColor RIP is configured to read embedded profile in RGB TIFF (this it
can do).
* BESTColor RIP performs conversion from embedded "ProPhotoRGB" profile to
source "PressCMYK" and then on to destination "PaperProfileCcMmYK" profile
of Epson 5000.
Is this correct? If not, how can I make it work as I've described?
I DO NOT want to be able to use the full gamut of the Epson 5000. I need to
be able to simulate the RGB data in PressCMYK AS IF it's already been
converted to CMYK.
And....
2) Will the BESTColor RIP accept 16-bit data in both RGB and CMYK form?
For maximum image editing flexibility, we need to keep things in it's
original 16-bit form until just before final RGB-to-CMYK and 16-to-8-bit
conversion.
As a side note, so far we've been VERY pleased with the performance of the
BESTColor RIP simulating analog proof/press CMYK with a normal CMYK
workflow.
Regards,
Terry
