Continued from Part A
GATF and .org:
The GATF is a non-profit organization formed for the benefits of
people and companies in the Graphic Arts world - that's my
interpretation of the group anyway.
I am a believer in industry associations and as such am a member of
the GATF. When the GATF puts on a conference, I'm sure some people
who put it together get paid in some way. However, I do not mind
going to the conference and contributing in some way without pay. I
get to participate in the conference without paying the attendance
fee, I get to share ideas with my colleagues, and I get industry and
customer recognition as an expert in the field. To me, that's payment
enough and I am happy to help out. I understand that others have
different feelings on the matter and want to be paid for the work or
have other costs covered, that's up to them. I don't think bashing
the conference for that choice is a great idea though.
Information Level & Intended Audience:
There have been a couple of comments concerning the level of
information presented at the conference. Please keep in mind that the
conference is intended for people who are struggling with color
management, not CM experts. Quite frankly, many of the people don't
know a rendering intent from their.... well you get the impression. I
think they have lined up a pretty good set of sessions this year.
They have also split it into the "level one" people and the "level
two" people so attendees of different levels can come and get
relevant information.
So, after a huge post I guess perhaps I'm coming off as pretty
altruistic - maybe I am misinterpreting the GATF and the meaning of
the conference. At any rate, I liked it last year and will be
attending it again this year. I hope to see interested parties - my
colleagues, manufacturers, and customers there as well.

Steve Upton
