As I understand it, the generic is an average reading for each color from
many charts and the custom gives you the reading for each patch FOR THAT
INDIVIDUAL color chart.

What I would like to know is - is it really worth it?

The custom-measured Colorchecker DC is measured by hand - that's one of the reasons why it costs $100 more.

As to whether or not it is worth it, I think time will tell. The batches of targets made so far are probably fairly small so the difference between averaged readings and custom readings may not be that big.

I have done some comparisons between the batch-averaged and custom readings and it seems there is some difference. It seems to be in the more saturated colors. The largest error I have found was dE 2.3. Most errors are below 2.0 and the great majority of them are under 1.0 as well.

If these numbers are within your tolerance then you probably do not need the custom measured target.

Steve Upton
