Dear Henrik and David
Thanks for the input, much appreciated. I realise this list is really for
Mac related stuff so will keep my posting as brief as possible, however
there has been quite a bit of discussion about Best RIP here and with the
Mac version soon to be available, perhaps its of interest to enough people
to justify this<G>

If you look at this List, consider how complex workflows we all have,
and consider how you would write a manual that includes not only the
UI button level, but also what users are trying to do with other
pieces of software, then you'll see how hard it might be to fully
document even a simple color server such as BEST.
The trend in OS documentation as in other general purpose products
like RIPs is to minimize the documentation, and try to make the UI
simple. Not always successfully, though.
Richard replies
All that I ask is that the facilities and the way they work and should be
applied are clearly and correctly documented. This may all seem so simply
to you colour geeks<G> The people at Best seem at a loss to be of much
assistance when one phones them, so this leaves the user stranded and very
frustrated. It is a comment that I frequently hear about many products
being sold to the imaging world.

Ehrm...it's pigs that fly in the line you're thinking of, and not cows -:).
Richard replies
Correct, I must have been side tracked by the BSE issues, and cows flying
seems even less likely than pigs <G>

The way I see it, you have the wrong printer for the type of workflow
you aim to build. What you want sounds more like a rollfed than a
sheetfed workflow. A sheetfed workflow will always have you assemble
the images in QuarkXPress or some other application with layout
functionality. A rollfed workflow can (to some extent) leave that up
to the printer.
Richard replies
Ours is a small output operation. The printer combination is the one that
Best were recommending as the optimum for their software prior to the launch
of the Canon 8500 and the larger Epsons, so surely we are not expecting too
much. They have offered the nesting facility as one reason for purchasing
their product. The problem we have here is not one of scale of output,
rather one of geting our images out of Photoshop to Best, without having to
select as small a paper size as available for each and every image. My
apologies if I did not explain this clearly originally.

Henrik wrote
With any of these products you have to know a lot about ICC color
management to configure a workflow. What you should do is tell the
RIP to apply the embedded RGB profile.
Richard replies
Well now, we have applied the RGB reference profile supplied by Best where
the CMYK reference profile goes but no joy.

Best is largely European in distribution, and to-date is Windows based...
this list is largely populated with US based Mac users... so few of us are
using the software ourselves... in fact I never installed the demo they sent
me. If they send me a copy of the new Mac RIP, then I'll probably bother to
install and test that... <G>
Richard replies
I understand but with one US agent having stated he has put in 100 plus Best
installations, I would have expected that a few users might have shown up on
this list, and he is only one outlet over there. It would be very
interesting to hear how you get on if Best send you a copy, however I rather
understood that the Mac release was going to be a 'Lite' version. Can
anyone verify this?
Thank you both for your contributions.
Best regards
Richard
