I think, he said so because of problems with profiling scanner for
transparencies. Dynamic range for reflective original is 0- 2.0D
(printed one) and for photos may be a little bit greater. For
transparent original dynamic range is 0-4D or even greater. The most
problem arise mainly with gradation not color, because you have to
compress this 4D into 2D. So it is much easier to create scanner profile
for reflective original than for transparencies. This is the only way I
can explain the problem I got right now too, profiling my Tango drum
scanner with Profile Maker 3.1. And still don't have any solution for
this. I got just fine result profiling Topaz II for reflective original
using standard procedure, but my scans from transparencies looks darker
than slides, and canned Tango's profiles are much more darker then my
current one. So I can say that I didn't reach the same quality of
profile for transparencies as for reflective one. Actually I think it's
almost impossible to get universal gradation curve for all slides,
because of compression. Some slides got lots of information in shadows
while other in midtone or highlights or even everywhere , but I'm still
looking for gradation that suite for most slides. In this case Color
Assistant is very helpful too, but nobody will beat OPERATOR. I was
impressed how far my scanner can see in shadows after replacing canned
profiles with custom one. But problems with profiles still exists and
any advises are greatly appreciated.
