A calibrated monitor is little more than the "devil you know" in terms of
colour. It's ability to display colours is limited -- even small gamuts like
SWOP have whole ranges of colours that cannot be accurately displayed on a
monitor.
You have to use your cursor and check the colour values for critical
pre-press work -- don't trust your monitor

We have a page on our web site that we use for training our retouchers. It's
a bit basic, but conveys the fact that often they will be working in colour
spaces like Ekta that are so much larger than monitor space that you can no
longer "believe you eyes" and have to check the colour values.

Actually, I am curious about how accurate the Out of Gamut display is in
Photoshop. The shapes and sizes of the gamuts seem to differ significantly
from those produced by a dedicated program like iccProfileViewer...
