Has anyone had a chance to play with the Nikon Super Coolscan 4000

I was surprised too when I saw these specs on the announcement of this
scanner. Maybe there is a theoretical threshold that should range in bit
depth to this but no way can a scanner in this class see into 4.2. For that
matter I'm not so sure any CCD scanner can really see 4.2. Phillip
Lippincott has tested more scanners than anyone and maybe he'd cough up some
reality specs for us.

That's Right! Imacon CCD's, $10-$20K, claim 3.9 or 4.1 max density
(their chart is a bit confusing on this point). To get to 4.2 you
need something like a Howtek HiResolve drum (PMT) scanner, $28-$36K.
What's up with this Nikon $1700 model???
