I have yet to find a straight answer to this question, even after thumbing
through Adobe's PostScript Language Reference... maybe someone here can
help: When printing to a device via PostScript, exactly when are any
necessary color conversions done? As the PS file is generated? or at the
RIP?
Case in point... sometimes it's necessary for us to run PostScript files
instead of .tif to our LightJet 5000. I recently found out our techs in that
department sometimes use a NovaJet PPD to generate PS files because 1) No
native PPD exists for the LightJet and 2) the NovaJet PPD has many of the
necessary print sizes we use for the LightJet.
Are we losing color information by running RGB files through a PPD for a
non-RGB printer, then outputting on an RGB device? Or is the native RGB info
retained in the PostScript file that is generated, leaving any necessary
conversions to be done later by the RIP server? Should we be using a PPD for
another RGB printer (Lambda, etc) instead?
I've run several RGB prints both ways, and am not seeing any differences
visually between the print methods. Unfortunately, I don't yet have the
software or hardware to check more properly (my spectro is a DTP 41).
Thanks!
