The default only applies when a CMM is not specified in the application,
and when ColorSync is set to "Automatic" for the CMM to use. Automatic
isn't a very good term here. It should either be "Profile Default" or
"Random."
In Photoshop 6, depending on your Color Settings, a CMM has already been
specified so the default CMM in the profile probably doesn't apply. If
you go into Color Settings, check the Advanced checkbox, about 3/4's of
the way down is an option to select an engine (as well as a CMM). I would
just use the Adobe (ACE) option. It will use that engine/CMM.
