The space you are working is, is the space you've used to tag the image. It
can be an output space (like any CMYK file). A Working Space is just that, a
space in which you edit your files. By virtue of embedded a profile, you
tell Photoshop 6 "this is the space I am working in" or in other words, this
is what the numbers in this file mean.
The Working Space you pick in color settings is just a preference for a
colorspace definition for PS to use when you create a new file (command N)
or open an untagged file. Since PS needs some definition of all files you
bring into it, the Working Space you pick in color pref's is simply your
choice for dealing with untagged files. If that isn't your intent, use the
Assign Profile command and tag the image as it should be (or to your liking)
