Exactly my point! You can't define accurate because it is not static. To
make it even more difficult, accurate may not be the desired result as you
pointed out regarding CompassProfile profiles and the opinions of
photographers.
This is why I constantly maintain that our *opinions* about "the most
accurate" are rarely relevant. The only opinion that I can offer that
should be held with any regard is who I believe makes the best India Pale
Ale. It is Bert Grant's IPA and you can bank on that.
I think Andrew's idea of a profile shoot-out is great. I was unfortunately
too rapped up in my own little universe when he asked for input. My only
"knock" would be that the results would last only as long as Photo Plus
Expo. What if I could not go to the exhibition or I was unaware? Post the
profiles made at the shoot-out on a website to download for real-world
evaluation along with some direction as to how they should be applied to
ensure an effective test. Publish the media type so the test can be
replicated and I think you have a winner.
(Assumption coming) I doubt very seriously that my vendor peers would
object to distributing one profile per inkjet brand (say one HP, Roland,
ColorSpan, Mimaki, Encad, etc.) for the purpose of evaluation. I personally
would not mind if a customer did not buy because they felt after evaluating
the profiles, he liked another better than mine. Conversely, I would not
want to take on the tech support for a customer who blindly made a decision
and was unhappy with the product.
If these are good products, and most if not all are, we all stand to make
this a profitable endeavor. It's the closest thing we can come to a test
drive without actually making someone leave a deposit or risk the vehicle
being stolen.
