There is a phenomenon common to profile based color
conversions where the maximum saturation colors do not process effectively,
leaving the outside row of patches in a 2d color slice very unsaturated,
while the next row in, which somewhat lower numbers in the initial space, end
up seperating very well. So again, photos might convert excellently, while
the maximal colors might not. Try your conversions on the 729 patchs (9x9x9
patch color cube) that forms the color target in ColorVision Profiler
software, or any similarly organized patch set, and you will see these
variations immediately.
The real issue in my mind is that anything that fails in a system,
causes folks to fear the system. We need to, as a community, find
better answers to the information C. David provided.
There are many applications where the max value colors are expected
to produce max saturation on paper, trans, or clear media.
Illustrator uses some functions which do not always RIP correctly. A
work-around is to Export as TIFF.
Provided that the working space is optimized for the input and output
devices, then a better use of the saturation rendering intent by
output profiles seems to be needed.
I am pleased that at least a couple manufacturers are working to
achieve better saturation rendering intent, while leaving the
pictorial content to behave normally (as if using perceptual intent
for that content).
Your insight certainly helps analyze each manufacturer's success in this area.
