Is there any reason I should be making 16bit printer profiles if I am using
8bit dcam scanner profiles when using Profile Maker 3.x
The printer profiles are 16 bit whether you choose Default or Large.
Default uses fewer grid points than Large.
Default uses 25 from Lab to CMYK and 11 from CMYK to Lab.
Large uses 33 from Lab to CMYK and 17 from CMYK to Lab.
The resolution is asymmetric in most printer profiles (except the
legacy profiles created by Photoshop). For Lab to CMYK the resolution
is lower as this is where the gamut compression occurs and you rely
more on smarts to reallocate colors than on 1:1 colorimetric
reproduction. From CMYK to Lab the resolution is higher as this is
where the result of the gamut compression is communicated 1:1
colorimetrically back to Lab for simulation on the DestinationRGB
device (: soft-proofing) and the DestinationCMYK device (:
proof-printing or reseparation for other output).
Hope this helps.
