Really, that's the only reason? Not because apps might prefer local

No of course its not the only reason. I do believe however, that if
ColorSync had shipped with commonly used working spaces, developers would
have certainly considered using the ColorSync Workflow as their inital
settings. Then maybe the average user who doesn't know anything about color
or tagging/embedding may have been able to move their documents between
applications with less problems.
I really like the way PhotoShop 6 ships with a basic set of profiles and
workflow settings. The large majority of users would find at least one of
these workflows would suit their situation. However I would like the
installer to maybe prompt the user to select one of these settings instead
of defaulting to Web Graphics (with sRGB as the default RGB). Possibly, it
could work like the Apple Setup Assistant - getting to user to answer
questions like their region, whether they are designing for press or for the
net etc. It could then choose working space settings based on their answers.
I would love to see ColorSync ship with a basic set of "working space"
profiles. The decision of profiles to include is best left to the experts,
but I don't want this topic kept completely offline as Henrik suggested :)
Come up with some ideas, and come back to the list for discussion. I hope
that our feedback is somewhat valuable, even if we are just average users...
