Profiling the Epson 5000 Stylus Pro.
It has been observed on this list that the Epson 5000 appears as an RGB
device on the Mac, so that the appropriate printer profile is an RGB
profile. The device (using Quickdraw) does the conversion from RGB to
CMY(K).
Given the above, what is the best option to use in profiling software - RGB
or CMYK? A number of profile makers (ColorSynergy, Gretag, Monaco) offer the
ability to make a profile for a RGB or CMYK printer. Does anybody have a
feeling as to whether the RGB option should be chosen because the device
wants to pretend it is an RGB device. Of course all UCR/GCR control will be
lost.
If you're printing through the Quickdraw driver, UCR/GCR control is
illusory--the application from which you're printing has to turn the
data back into RGB to feed it to the driver.
I've obtained excellent results profiling the Epson 5000 as an RGB device.
