I apologize in advance for my ignorance. I run a small design studio,
with clients ranging from Mom and Pop businesses up through
international corporations. My old UMax scanner (24 bit) is about to
peter out, so I'm shopping. I don't do a high volume, and not too
much transparency, but would like something that could do a decent
job color copying on the random assortment of things that clients
walk in with that don't really merit an outside drum scan. Some scans
will be for final product (output or page layout), and some position
only.
Does anyone have feedback on the Astra 6400 (Umax), the Epson
Perfection 1650, or Microtek ScanMaker 5700? Nominal catalog specs on
all three seem pretty decent, at a good price, but I'm wondering
about performance.
I'm mostly curious about the following issues:
1) adapability to a color-managed workflow. (I understand some
scanners are more difficult than others.)
2) speed of throughput (my old Umax had a 3 pass scan which drove me
nuts. It was also loud.)
3) flexibility (eg Twain for Photoshop etc.)
I appreciate any suggestions you might have -- especially owners who
found one thing or another drove them nuts.
I also understand that there are USB to FireWire adapters. Do they
allow the equipment to connect at FireWire speed, or does it just
allow USB speed to enter at the FireWire port through a cable change?
Would I be better off getting a SCSI equipped model?
Best wishes,
George
