I would suggest a workflow product like GretagMacbeth's iQueue or
Praxisoft's ICC Autoflow.
iQueue 110, which limits its processing to raster files (JPEG, TIFF,
etc) is not terribly expensive and can be used on an ongoing basis
for lots of useful workflow automations. We have a client who uses a
whole server farm of them for processing many thousands of
photofinishing images.
It's under $500 and available for Mac or Windows.

You can also step up to the more capable iQueue 120 (+postscript,
vector substitution) or 140 (+print queues and PDF) or ICC Autoflow
(postscript, PDF(NT version), vector substitution, etc) to round out
your workflow and offer tons of processing options and proofing
capabilities.
I think these color servers, while often seen as a "temporary
stopgap" to make up for dumb apps and RIP's, are often the saviors of
CM workflows.
