If indeed the scanner is converting to Adobe RGB on the fly (questionable
but possible), then what you are doing is not such a good idea. If the
scanner really is converting from scanner RGB to Adobe RGB, then assigning
the scanner and doing another conversion is a really bad idea.

That's correct. Question is, are the numbers in scenario #1 and #2 the same?
If so, then the scanner really isn't providing you Adobe RGB (it's not doing
the conversion on the fly) then what you were doing above is a good idea. So
we need to know if the Nikon software really is using some source profile
and converting on the fly into Adobe RGB (and tagging it as such). With most
scanners on the market, I'd guess they are doing this but with Nikon, I'd
test this theory as in the past, their implementation of color management
has been.... confused!
