I have been testing different methods to create custom profiles for some of the Leaf backs. I have worked with the Cantare XY and the new C-Most. I have not had the chance to work on a Volare yet but I believe the method I am working towards will apply.
First though, the statement about not being able to export high bit tiffs is false. Working in a high bit depth and being able to export high bit files (including tiff) is a cornerstone of Leaf software and backs.
The part about characterizing the chip is a little trickier. So far this is what I have discovered. First I shoot a target and use Leaf Standard 1 curve and do not try to make a linear curve. Leaf Capture uses ProPhotoRGB and will embed this color space to the exported file or do a conversion and embed any one of the selected rgb working spaces available in the icc preferences. I choose camera rgb (which embeds ProPhotoRGB) and export the file. I then open the file in PS6 and since I use Adobe 1998 and have profile mismatch to ask when opening I am able to discard the embedded color space. I then size the file and have a profile built from the untagged file. I am now in the middle of testing to see how versatile the profile is in terms of how much lighting change can occur before the benefits of using the profile become invalid.
Also the custom profile should not be used in Leaf Capture, but be applied to future files by assigning the profile in photoshop. If you register the profile in Leaf Capture and use it in the input profile area you will get strange looking results.
As a note some of this may or may not change when the new version of Leaf Capture is released.

As an 8 bit tiff. Too bad you can't export high bit tiff's but Leaf doesn't

The best you can do is make a linear curve, save it, shoot the target to

build the profile and use that curve with the profile from then on.
