Tagged file gets darker

When I tag a file in Photoshop (6) as Adobe RGB (1998) it gets darker, even though I am using the same space
as my 'working space'.

Am I doing something wrong?

This happened last night when I took a grayscale file and then converted it the RGB and then 'tagged' it with
the space Adobe RGB.
