This is the question:
Do you set up the BEST rip with the densities and total ink limits 'before'
profiling, which leaves the profile to do less work, (kinda like setting the
RGB guns in a monitor before profiling)
Or
Let the profile define do all the work, as with the Mach1 Rip ?
If you can, ALWAYS setup a RIP to have appropriate ink limits and
make it as linear as possible prior to profiling.
The linearization step available in some profiling applications is to
compensate for non-linear devices. It will never do as good a job as
if you had linearized the device yourself.
Imagine a worst-case scenario (one I have seen fairly often) where
the K channel was linearized so poorly that L values were
unavailable. In this case, as you fed 0-100% K to the device, there
would be grey values that would be unavailable (showing up as plugged
shadows or blown highlights, for instance). No profile, no matter how
well made, will every be able to coax those grey values out of the
device, they are not miracle workers.
I have seen careful ink limiting and linearization turn crappy images
from a struggling profile into great images from an easy-to-make
profile. Spend the time up front and you will be rewarded.
